— Three Centennial Elementary and two Sequoyah Middle School teams qualified to compete in the 34th Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Michigan State University.

Only three of the teams will be attending the competition May 22-25.

“Two of the Centennial teams had fifth-graders as members, and the world finals will be during their last day of school,” coach Marci Post said.

Generally, a school district will have one or two teams qualify, but it is out of the ordinary for five teams to qualify, Post said.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.

“Teams of seven kids are challenged to tackle one of the five problems ranging from building vehicles to making up silly scripts based on literary classics,” Post said. “Once a week after school for several months, they work out their own team solution and then take it to competition to see how it stacks up against other teams' ideas.”

The Sequoyah “Pet Project” team members are Michael Shivley, Jacob Anderson, Ashley Schlepp, Will Gilliland, Taylor Downey, Mackenzie Martin and coach Phil Gilliland.
