EDMOND — Edmond is offering a communitywide Suicide Prevention Summit twice during the day on Saturday in the Pegasus Theater in the Liberal Arts Building on the University of Central Oklahoma campus.
The first free summit is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the second from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
People who know someone who is experiencing thoughts of suicide or signs of depression are encouraged to attend. Participants can stay for one or both of the sessions.
Suicide prevention efforts started in Edmond in April after the city experienced several teen suicides within a short time. In 2012, Edmond police officers responded to 13 suicides and 55 attempted suicides, said Jennifer Monroe, Edmond police spokeswoman.
Victims have been male and female and ranged in age from 14 to over 60.
Sessions for parents, teachers and faith leaders will be held as well as a suicide prevention training session on how to help in a time of a crisis and help for teens.
There also will be booths with specialists from the community who will be on hand to answer questions and provide resources to families.
A Suicide Prevention Task Force was formed with volunteers from the Edmond Police Department, Edmond Family Counseling, UCO, Edmond Public Schools, Heart Line, OU Medicine Trauma Prevention and National Alliance of Mental Illness.
