Edmond's Bicycle Master Plan churns up excitement
A 90-page bicycle master plan was approved by this week by the Edmond City Council. A pilot program to initiate the master plan is in the works.
EDMOND — Dozens of miles of bicycle routes would be created under a master plan approved this week by the Edmond City Council.
“I am excited for Edmond and the community,” bicyclist Brian Fairless said. “This will open up bicycling and put Edmond up there with other cities like Boulder, Colo., and Austin, Texas.”
“It makes us a more modern city and promotes a healthy lifestyle.”
The master plan, written by consultants Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., recommends 146.2 miles of paths, bike lanes and marked areas for people to ride bicycles throughout the city. Total cost would be $17.2 million.
Bicyclist Terry Storch said this will create safer places for people to ride.
“It promotes a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
Councilman and bicyclist Darrell Davis called approval of the plan “a big accomplishment.”
“I am very excited to have a comprehensive plan,” he said. “We want to make biking safe and enjoyable for the people in Edmond.
