— City council members this week decided to build a road through J.L. Mitch Park to help with the traffic situation around Cheyenne Middle School.

The vote was unanimous to spend $330,000 for a supplemental appropriation. The money will come out of the capital improvement fund, a special tax approved by voters in 2000 for capital improvements.

Members of the Capital Projects and Financing Task Force earlier recommended approval of the supplement.

Traffic in the area, especially around Cheyenne Middle School, 1271 W Covell Road, is a problem when parents are dropping off and picking up their children.

Assistant City Manager Steve Commons said, “The city has been working with the Edmond Public Schools to develop improved traffic flow in the area of Cheyenne Middle School at Kelly and Covell.

“The completion of the Covell widening has increased the roadway capacity, but currently access is limited to the shared roadway that leads to our skate park.”

City officials think the new road will be of value to the park and the school.

“This will decrease the amount of traffic that only has the option of going in and out of Covell,” Commons said.
