Edson Avila won't enroll at OU

by Ryan Aber Published: August 19, 2013

Until just before they left for their recent European trip, Oklahoma’s coaches remained outwardly confident that junior college power forward Edson Avila would arrive in Norman for the fall semester.

But the 6-foot-10 Avila will not attend Oklahoma this fall, a spokesman for the OU athletics department confirmed. SoonerSports.com first reported that Avila would not arrive.

Avila averaged 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds for Seward County (Kan.) Community College last season.

When Oklahoma updated its roster just before the trip, junior college transfer Keshaun Hamilton was listed but Avila was absent.

Neither player was with the team during the 10 practices before the trip or went to Belgium and France with the team. Oklahoma went 4-1 on the trip.

The loss of Avila hurts an already thin frontcourt for the Sooners.

While Oklahoma has a large group of solid guards returning from last year’s team that made the NCAA Tournament, the Sooners lost most of their frontcourt.

Senior Tyler Neal, who played in 27 games last season but didn’t start, is the lone returning forward.

D.J. Bennett and Ryan Spangler are eligible after sitting out last season and center Hamilton is enrolled.
