NORMAN — John Snow, dean of University of Oklahoma’s College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, is to be inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame.
The hall’s Class of 2009 induction ceremony and dinner, organized by the
Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society, will be held tonight at the National Cowboy &
Western Heritage Museum in
Oklahoma City.
"The Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society recognizes men and women who have shown excellence in higher education and have encouraged economic growth and quality of life in Oklahoma,” society President Dan Hobbs said. "John Snow exhibits all of these qualities and has shown exceptional service and devotion to Oklahoma’s higher education for many years.”
Snow received his doctorate in atmospheric science in 1977 from
Purdue University and taught there 16 years before joining OU in 1993 to become dean of the College of Geosciences.
Snow was instrumental in developing the
National Weather Center, the multistory facility housing academic, state and federal organizations that is situated on OU’s research campus. Snow also contributed to the organization of the
College of Earth and Energy.
Snow has said he plans to step down effective July 1 to become a regular faculty member in the
OU School of Meteorology. He plans to teach courses in applications of meteorology, severe weather and system dynamics.
