Halloween safety

• Make sure children are supervised by a responsible adult at all times and make sure children stay with their group.

• Only trick-or-treat at well-lit houses.

• Make sure costumes are fire retardant.

• Don’t let kids eat any candy that has not been checked for safety and discard any treats that appear to have been opened.

• Have children carry a flashlight or attach reflective tape to their costumes to make them more visible to motorists.

• Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.

• Watch out for traffic when crossing the street, and don’t cross between parked cars.

• Keep speeds low when driving through neighborhoods, and watch out for children darting into the street.

And just because today is Halloween doesn’t mean that there will be any more or less of it than usual, she said. "It’s an everyday thing.”

Davis and her mother, Liz Massengale, are two of the eight members of the Moore group Paranormal Phenomena Investigations.

The members each chip in toward expenses of investigating cases. There is no charge to the clients. "I can’t see doing that,” Massengale said.

People who call or e-mail them for help sometimes are just looking for proof they’re not crazy, Massengale said. Some people ask "if you can contact them (the spirits) and if you can get rid of them.”

Most contacts for help are through their Web site, www.Ghosts4.com.

The group, which does about one investigation a month, uses a variety of devices to investigate paranormal activity, Massengale said.

Their arsenal includes an electromagnetic field detector, temperature gauge, motion detector, video camera with infrared capability and a digital recorder.

They don’t try to communicate with spirits through things like Ouija boards, Davis said. "The spirit itself decides what you’re going to get.”

After an investigation, the group makes a report to the client on their findings, Massengale said. Sometimes the investigations are inconclusive, she said.

Massengale got interested in the investigations to gain proof of "the true existence of an afterlife.”

Davis, a history buff, likes to use newspaper archives to research homes where there are unexplained things going on. "I believe history can explain a haunting,” she said.

"Activity” is nothing to be scared of, said Davis, who has noticed it around her for years. "You can live with the activity.”
