Eight more flu deaths were confirmed this past week, the state Health Department reported Thursday.

So far this flu season, 33 Oklahomans have died from the flu, including 13 people between 50 and 64 years old.

Additionally, 72 Oklahomans were confirmed this past week to have been hospitalized from the flu. A total of 975 residents have been hospitalized with the flu since the season started in late September.

By Feb. 14 of last year, 25 Oklahomans had died from the flu, including 20 who were 65 or older.

Flu-associated deaths were not reported through the state Health Department until the H1N1 pandemic in 2009. During that flu season, 48 Oklahomans were reported to have died from the flu.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that is largely preventable by getting a flu shot, public officials say. has disabled the comments for this article.
