Elk City snowboarder’s death blamed on freak accident

ELK CITY — Marion Khourie said it was a freak accident that took the life of her grandson, Billy, on a Colorado ski slope this week.
"Billy loved snowboarding and that’s how he got hurt,” she said. "He was a very good snowboarder, but the conditions were not the finest.” Billy Khourie III, 22, was declared brain dead late Wednesday night at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo. The coroner’s office in Frisco, Colo., said Thursday night that Khourie is set to have organs harvested today. Because of a lack of snow, the Breckenridge Ski Resort had covered some of the slopes with artificial snow. "They said it was very icy, and he hit a slick spot, lost control and hit his head on a padded post.” The grandmother said Billy Khourie must have been traveling at a high speed Tuesday when it happened because it left him with a severe concussion from which he never awoke. Billy Khourie was a senior at the University of Oklahoma, majoring in energy management. Family members said funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
