ROME (AP) — Empoli has returned to Serie A after a six-year absence.

The Tuscan club beat Pescara 2-0 Friday in the final match of the regular season to secure second place in Serie B and earn the last direct entry into the top division.

Palermo had already clinched the Serie B title with five matches to spare.

Latina, Cesena, Modena, Bari, Crotone and Spezia will go into a playoff to determine the third team that goes up.

Federico Di Francesco scored an own goal for Empoli in the 70th minute and Francesco Tavano doubled the lead in the 74th with his 22nd goal of the season.

Last season, Empoli lost to Livorno in the final of the promotion playoff.

Empoli has played nine seasons in Serie A, the last coming in 2007-08.
