Founded in Tulsa, it expanded from eight ambulances to 77 and has transported more than 1.54 million patients over three decades, according to a news release.

It was the first service of its kind in the country.

In its first year, EMSA transported fewer than 8,000 patients, a number that climbed to more than 113,000 in 2007.

"The work we do is stressful and hard, but is fulfilling because we help save lives,” President and CEO Stephen Williamson said in the release.
