Enid wins opener

Austin Box had two hits and scored three times on Thursday, and defending national champion Enid beat Tupelo, Miss., 8-1 in the first round of the American Legion Mid-South Regional tournament.

Box was 2-for-3, walked once, stole a base and hit Enid's only home run of the day. Tyson Seng, Jordan Kliewer and Cole Whatley added two hits each as Enid improved to 41-21.

Matt Peck and reliever Derrick Jantz combined for eight strikeouts. Peck pitched six innings, allowing a run on five hits.

Enid plays again today at approximately 7 p.m. It will face the winner of Thursday's late game between Warrensburg, Mo., and host Crowley, La.
