Enthusiasts row to new Route 66 Boathouse

Young and old attended the Route 66 Boathouse grand opening at Lake Overholser on Saturday, participating in free boating activities and checking out bike rentals.

The boathouse, which had been a bake shop for several years, has been renovated and prepared to bring activity to northwest Oklahoma City.

"We’ve made major repairs on the building making it ready for business,” said Matthew Woodson, director of canoe and kayak programs at the boathouse. "We’re hoping to get both kids and adults involved with outside activities.”

Along with kayaking, canoeing and biking, the boathouse will be conducting tours through the 1,000-acre Stinchcomb Wildlife Preserve.

Lucas Biddie, 14, said being on the dragon boat — a long, paddle-powered vessel — was exciting.

"Being in the water is cool and seeing the boat move almost tipping over is cool too,” Lucas said. "I think a lot of people should ride in one.
