— An inmate who escaped from the Custer County jail was arrested Monday in Warr Acres, police said.

Nicholas Todd Van Brunt, 36, was on a work assignment at the jail in Arapaho Sunday morning when he walked away and stole a vehicle, Custer County Sheriff Bruce Peoples said.

Warr Acres police were notified about 9 a.m. Monday after Van Brunt used a cellphone that was traced to the 5900 block of NW 45 in Warr Acres.

Warr Acres police Sgt. Alan Davidofsky said Van Brunt was driving away from a home and was stopped nearby. He surrendered without incident and apologized for escaping, Davidofsky said. Custer County deputies were sent to pick him up at the Warr Acres jail Monday.

Van Brunt was serving time at the county jail on a larceny conviction.
