For three “foreigners” who had never called a Bedlam game before, play-by-play announcer Bob Wischusen of New Jersey, analyst Danny Kanell of Florida and sideline reporter Maria Taylor of Georgia turned in a solid effort in broadcasting one of the most exciting Bedlam games ever.
“I'd do this game every year if they'd let me,” said Wischusen, the radio voice of the New York Jets, said on his Twitter account at halftime.
The trio had done their homework and also brought passion to the broadcast that Oklahomans expect in calling the huge intrastate rivalry.
In describing the winning touchdown in overtime, Wischusen said, “This time it's Brennan Clay … he bucks free … Clay at the 5 … Touchdown! … and Bedlam is over.”
Kanell said, “Brennan Clay, what a great individual effort. Rivalry games are all about big moments. It doesn't get much bigger than that in overtime for Oklahoma.”
A former Florida State and NFL quarterback, Kanell astutely analyzed the quarterback play. Although he was impressed with OSU junior Clint Chelf for much of the game, he noticed he had fallen off in the fourth quarter. On third down in overtime, he noted Chelf's pass was behind receiver Blake Jackson.
“Clint Chelf for the first time looked a little indecisive on where he wanted to go with the ball, and was holding it a long time.”
Kanell wasn't a big fan of either team switching quarterbacks in short-yardage situations, but he gave Blake Bell his due on his 4-yard scoring run on fourth down that sent the game into overtime.
“Boy, it must be nice to be 6-6, 254 pounds, put your nose down and find the goal line.”
He noted Chelf also had shown strong running skills. “J.W. Walsh, the backup in this game, was described as their dual threat here. Clint Chelf is showing his ability to make plays on the ground.”
Kanell also spoke highly of Landry Jones, who despite becoming the Big 12's all-time leading passer with back-to-back 500-yard passing games, still has his share of critics among Sooner fans.
