JAY A 16-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder here in the slaying of his 78-year-old step-grandmother, Delaware County Sheriff Bob Hughes said Monday.
Arthur Monroe Hevel of Eucha is being held in the county jail without bail, assistant district attorney Bobby Chris Ramsey said.
A preliminary hearing for Hevel, who is charged as an adult, is scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 31.
Hevel is accused in the shotgun slaying of Florence Downing, whose body was found Nov. 6 in a blood-soaked bed at her mobile home, 8 miles southeast of Jay. She had apparently been shot once in the heart while she slept, Hughes said.
Hughes said robbery and revenge may have been motives for the slaying. He said $120 was missing from the woman's purse.
"He (Hevel) had some hard feelings against her," Hughes said.
"She had put him, his mother and a brother out of the house two weeks earlier. She had asked them to leave."
Hughes said Downing's husband, the natural father of Hevel's mother, had died of cancer a month earlier.
There was no sign of forced entry into the mobile home, located in a rural, sparsely populated area, Hughes said. A friend, who did Downing's shopping and cleaning, notified authorities when she was unable to get inside the locked mobile home. BIOG: NAME:Archive ID: 328355
