Evacuees allowed more time for aid

Hurricane Katrina and Rita evacuees have been given an additional 60 days to apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance, it was announced Thursday.

Families are urged to apply as soon as possible. The original deadline of Jan. 11 has been extended to March 11.

Evacuees who have not registered for assistance may call the toll-free registration line, (800) 621-3362. Those speech- or hearing-impaired may call TTY, (800) 462-7585.

Applications also are online at www.fema.gov.

Evacuees need to supply:

Current phone number.

Address at the time of the disaster and current address, if different.

Social Security number.

A general list of damages and losses suffered.

Directions to the damaged property.

Insurance policy numbers or company and agent names, if insured.

General financial information.
