Hand problems affect elderly

Each of your hands contains about 29 bones, 29 joints, 123 ligaments, 34 muscles, 48 nerves and 30 arteries, according to www.eatonhand.com. That's a lot of parts that could break down. Age and disease can reduce hand strength, agility and stability. Dr. Margaret Porembski of the Integris Hand and Microsurgery Center can help you learn more about common hand problems that affect senior adults. Porembski will discuss arthritis, mucous cysts, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger fingers and De Quervain's tenosynovitis during three free educational programs this month:

Pre-Mother's Day event planned

The Integris Comprehensive Breast Center invites you (and your Mom) to “Pamper with a Purpose,” an event that combines relaxation and health care. During the “exclusive, stress-free morning,” women will enjoy free heart health screening, looking at glucose and cholesterol levels, as well as skin cancer screenings, bra fittings, spa hand treatments, manicures and mammograms, according to a news release. The mammogram's cost will be billed to your insurance provider, so be sure to bring insurance information, a personal health history and the name of your primary care physician. Screenings will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 12, at the Breast Center, 3525 NW 56. Appointments are limited. To reserve a spot, call 951-2277.
