KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) — Bond has been set at $10 million for a Kankakee man accused in the stabbing death of an 81-year-old doctor and the wounding of his wife.
Phillip Lee Horrell appeared via video in Kankakee County Circuit Court on Monday. The 35-year-old is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Dr. James Goldenstein and attempted murder in the wounding of 81-year-old Betty Goldenstein. He did not enter a plea during the hearing.
Goldenstein was found dead early Friday in his home. His wife was stabbed several times and is hospitalized.
The Illinois Department of Corrections said Horrell was discharged Wednesday from Dixon Correctional Center after serving time for burglary and other charges.
Defense attorney Lawrence Beaumont says he will meet with and make an assessment of Horrell's mental state.
