Ex-lawmaker Ryan McMullen begins federal ag job
Ryan McMullen has ended his five years of service as a legislator to become the youngest state rural development director for the U.S. Agriculture Department.
McMullen, a Democrat from Burns Flat elected to the House in 2004, took his oath of office Wednesday in Stillwater to serve as Oklahoma’s director of rural development. He submitted a letter of resignation to Gov. Brad Henry, who has 30 days to set a special election. McMullen, 30, was appointed to the post by President Barack Obama’s agriculture secretary. Three people, two Republicans and a Democrat, plan to seek the House District 55 seat, which covers Washita and parts of Caddo, Canadian and Kiowa counties. Republicans Todd Russ of Cordell, a city councilman, and Jeff Ledford of Hobart and Cordell Mayor Alex Damon have said they would seek McMullen’s post. McMullen oversees the three agencies in Oklahoma: Rural Housing Service, Rural Business Service and Rural Utility Service.
