PHILADELPHIA — Former Oklahoma gymnast Jonathan Horton was named to the U.S. team for the Beijing Games on Saturday after finishing with the top score at the Olympic trials.

Horton, from Houston, finished atop the field in Saturday's second round of competition with an overall score of 90.750. He also had the top two-day total, 181.30.

"I have worked my whole life for this, and I am so excited right now,” said Horton. "I was just having fun, loving the sport and doing what I can do.

"I've had some struggles this year, but I got back in the gym and worked hard and told myself I would make this team. I am more confident and comfortable with my gymnastics right now than any other time in my life.”

Horton turned in a solid performance Saturday in all six events.

The former Sooner had the second best score in four events — vault (16.150), still rings (15.950), floor exercise (15.650) and parallel bars (15.650).

Horton finished second to Alexander Artemev in the first round of competition Thursday, but Artemev faltered Saturday, falling to fifth with an overall score of 89.270.

Joseph Hagerty finished second to Horton with a score of 89.940.

Raj Bhavsar (89.860) was third and David Durante (89.715) fourth.

Paul Hamm, who missed the trials because of a broken hand, also was named to the U.S. team.

Hamm, the reigning Olympic champion in the all-around, still will have to show a selection committee that he is physically able to compete at a training camp July 22 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The rest of the six-man Olympic team is expected to be finalized today.
