Fitness and food at sea
DAY 2 ABOARD THE MS. NOORDAM -- Just like most of you, I’ve started the year off with a new fitness regimen. It’s brutal getting up before sunrise and heading to the gym in subfreezing temperatures. So, just imagine starting your workout routine as the sun rises, with 70-degree temp, on a walking track atop a magnificent cruise ship, breezing across the ocean toward your next tropical port.
First thing this morning I headed up to the track for a 30-minute jumpstart to my day. A half-marathon is in my future thanks to Tammy Cannady at Choctaw Nation Health Services and starting my training on a cruise ship is pretty sweet. It makes those sunrise workouts practically no work at all.
After my morning workout, I was ready for breakfast. You must know that everything they say about the food on the Holland America Line cruises is true. The breakfast choices are splendid: Fruit, cereal, French toast, pastries, muffins, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs and even omelets made to order entice each morning. Although I would have loved a little bit of everything, I opted for watermelon, apricots and bananas with a blueberry muffin and orange juice.
I did make a rule for myself once I got on board. My cabin is on Deck 1 and the Lido Deck restaurant is on Deck 9. So anytime I leave my room, unless I am in dress shoes, I take the stairs. One of my favorite movies is "Just Go With It," where Jennifer Anniston tells Adam Sandler, "Cary Grant always took the stairs." So the stairs it is for me.
