However, you shouldn't go all "Jackass," as in the TV series and movies where reckless people try reckless stunts. Action sports are about doing things gradually with the proper equipment and training, said Mahoney, who grew up surfing and rollerblading and these days likes to snowboard winters in the Colorado Rockies.

"You don't just get on a skateboard, and you don't just get on a surfboard," he said. "It takes a lot of practice."

For those wanting that kind of action, a good start would be to check out the Extreme Sports Expo on Sept. 3 at Science Museum Oklahoma, he said.

Mahoney, academic networking coordinator for the museum, said museum staff is always "looking for unique ways to communicate with the public." The museum will be showing "Extreme," a new Imax film "packed with the most extreme sports out there," along with the Imax film "Everest," so it seemed the perfect time to invite local action sports retailers for an exposition, museum spokesman Alex Mattison said.
