Dachshund was missing lip, nose

TULSA — Staring out from the wreckage of her face, Daisy’s big brown eyes never wavered.

For those who saw the 6-year-old dachshund mix back then, it was the eyes that hooked them, helping ease the initial shock.

"On first glance she was definitely frightening,” SPCA spokeswoman Pat Atkinson recalls. "But on second look, you saw her looking up at you with those eyes — and then you didn’t see anything else.”

Daisy, who lost her nose and upper lip months ago in a presumed accident, was facing a grim future when the SPCA of Tulsa acquired her in February.

After two reconstructive surgeries and plenty of TLC from her new friends, Daisy has experienced a tail-wagging turnaround.

As someone who has met Daisy, I have something to add.

When I first met her, she looked like something out of Hellraiser. But she was friendly and didn't appear to be in obvious pain. Her injuries did affect her breathing, though, so something had to be done. The easy solution would be to put her down, but that was avoided in large part due to a kind and generous surgeon.

The money for Daisy's operation came from a special Tulsa SPCA fund, called the Sammy Fund, that assists pets in need of special medical care. That money comes from donations specifically earmarked for that purpose, often in honor of pets past and present.

You can read more about the Sammy Fund on the Tulsa SPCA website, www.tulsaspca.org.

The Tulsa SPCA is a non-profit organization that relies on donations for funding. It isn't affiliated with the Tulsa Animal Shelter or any national groups.

Oops, I misspelled ‘humane’, whoops. And I am a firm believer that if something doesn't serve a purpose, it needs to be put down. That's why I firmly support assisted-suicide programs, abortion, and the voluntary self-extinction of humans in general. Yes, I am in a foul mood today, even more so than usual :)

I have to say I am seriously disappointed in the lack of humanity displayed in this thread. If the dog was injured in a way that was permanent and would make its life one of constant suffering, then yes the humane thing would be to put the poor thing to rest. In this dog's cae it is just fine even if its not nearly as pretty as it once was, its still happy and healthy. Funny how almost all of those disappointing reactions come from the same people that are always saying ignorant things here.

Jesus, that...thing is hideous! Why does Newsok.com still have a photo of it on the main page?? Why are they forcing me to look at that grotesque horror? Who ever saved this animal should have done the human thing and drowned it. God, I'm sick to my stomach just looking at it.

Jason Seattle: Washington State has more than it's share of nutcases.

"Medical Examiner's Office ruled that the death was accidental and the result of having s@x with a horse."

Jason, Seattle - Aug 10, 2009 at 12:50 pm
What keeps bring me back to Newsok is, in Seattle, we just don't have news like "Man dies in noodeling accident". It's a tragedy, but just absurd. Things like that just don't happen in the rest of the country. Oh and you idiots with your red-state, bigoted views. That's pretty funny too.
Jason, Seattle - Aug 10, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Jason, Seattle...if you had subscribed to your own state newspaper, you might still have one. Please help fund another Seattle paper and leave us alone. There are so many posters from out of state that have no life.

Wow I guess Jason left the board meeting with Gates and found the time to go on to thesaurus.com. Thanks correcting her... cool guy!

I'm glad Daisy has someone that loves her unconditionally! This was a fantastic lesson...some deuch bags on this thread need to know what that kind of love intells!
Ashley, oklahoma city - Aug 10, 2009 at 12:22 pm

Paul is probably that guy from Tulsa who not too long ago was in trouble for videotaping his wife having sex with dogs...
Jason, Seattle - Aug 10, 2009 at 12:04 pm
It's not that Cletus, Jason and Paul are tough guys. They are from a lesser DNA pool, sub-humans that think and do things none of us would ever contemplate.

Cletus, Jason and Paul all together. With them gone, Oklahoman's collective IQ would no longer be in the "mentally challenged" basement.
