“You got it right today,” he said.

Hutchison said she was excited to share her message for educational success, a mix of ideas she calls “HT{+6}”: high tech, high touch, higher-level thinking, hands-on techniques, habitual thankfulness and heroic teachers.

Teachers have a real opportunity to change lives every day, she said, no matter what walk of life a student may come from.

“Public education takes a student where they are at,” she said.

As the winner, Hutchison will spend the next year speaking throughout the state and serving as an ambassador for Oklahoma teachers. She also is in the running for the title of National Teacher of the Year and will have the chance to meet the president at a summit in Washington, D.C.

Hutchison received about $50,000 in prizes, including use of a car for the year and a weeklong trip to Space Camp. Donors chip in everything from cash prizes to tuition waivers to gifts.
