Fairview math teacher is named Oklahoma Teacher of the Year

Hutchison teaches math at Fairview High School, Chamberlain Middle School and the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Regional Center in Fairview. She is also the assistant high school girls basketball coach and has taught for nearly 20 years.

She was one of a dozen regional finalists from across the state. Contestants submitted portfolios and videos, and then went through individual and group interviews earlier this month.

Carriage Hall was packed with cheering supporters and educators from across the state Tuesday morning. Friends of finalist Andrea Brock raised cutout posters of her face. Supporters of finalist Daniel Buckmaster wore stickers that read “Team Daniel.”

The excitement was a reminder that all teachers are appreciated for their work, state schools Superintendent Janet Barresi said.

When Barresi invited Fairview administrators to the stage to congratulate Hutchison, Superintendent Rocky Burchfield gave his employee a bear hug. He cut her off at the mic before she gave her acceptance speech. He addressed the contest judges.
