#FakeSXSW, Google Reader, Jeff Gordon, and dinosaurs

Lots of things happen on the Internet every week — but you already know that. Here’s some of the stuff that captured my attention (or just made me laugh) in my first two weeks back in the office after being in India for a month.

If you’re on Twitter, you no doubt know that SXSW, the annual music, film, and interactive conference, was going on down in Austin, Texas last week. And if you weren’t at SXSW, you were probably (at least) mildly annoyed by all of the SXSW hashtags in your timeline. That’s why #FakeSXSW, a hashtag that pokes good-natured (mostly, I mean, it’s the Internet) fun at the conference, was so fantastic.

The impending demise of Google Reader.

My first reaction to this news: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I use Google Reader, an RSS feed reader, daily. Google announced this month that Reader’s time on this Earth, er, Internet, is short: they’re killing it off on July 1, 2013.  “Spring cleaning,” they call it. I call it “ruining my life,” but ta-may-toe, ta-mah-toe, right?

Google has ever so slowly been making Reader harder to get to: first it disappeared from the main GMail navigation, then it dropped even further down the list of Google apps. We all should’ve seen this coming. Seems people are fleeing for Feedly, but I haven’t taken the time to research all of the options. I’ve been too busy rocking back and forth on the floor crying.

The Jeff Gordon test drive.

I know it’s fake. You know it’s fake. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t funny.

Jokes about dinosaurs.

I think this one speaks for itself.
