Swooping in: Handlers of eagles, hawks and falcons coming to Woodward

Falconers from across the globe are converging on Woodward today for the annual North American Falconers Association field meet.
Over the next few days, from 300 to 400 falconers will scatter across western Oklahoma and hunt for fur and feather with their birds of prey. Eagles, hawks and falcons will be swooping over the Oklahoma prairie in search of ducks, pheasants, rabbits, quail, foxes and squirrels. The North American Falconers’ Association is holding its annual field meet and conference in Oklahoma for the first time since 1990. Most of the meets are held in the western United States — the plains and mountain states — for the variety of game and access to it. Because so few people practice this "sport of kings,” falconers have separate and longer seasons than traditional hunting seasons.
