SAN DIEGO (AP) — David Fales threw four touchdown passes, including a 14-yarder to Chandler Jones with 50 seconds left, to lift San Jose State to a wild 38-34 win over San Diego State on Saturday night.
The lead was tied once and changed hands four times in the final quarter.
Fales completed 21 of 31 passes for 260 yards. He threw three of his TD passes in the fourth quarter as San Jose State (3-1) overcame a 24-17 deficit.
Fales also threw touchdown passes of 1 yard to Ina Liaina and a 21-yarder to Noel Grigsby early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 24. Tyler Ervin returned a kickoff 97 yards for a Spartans touchdown in the first half.
Ryan Katz put San Diego State (2-2) ahead with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Colin Lockett with 2:24 left for a 34-31 lead.
It came just more than one minute after Fales found Ryan Otten with a 15-yard scoring pass that put the Spartans up, 31-27.
For San Diego State, Adam Muema ran for a career-high 202 yards, including an 83-yard TD in the first half. Walter Kazee added 90 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
Chance Marden kicked field goals of 25 and 41 yards, the last one with 5:33 remaining that put the Aztecs ahead 27-24. It was the first time in nearly one year that San Diego State had made consecutive field goal attempts.
