SBC should have 50 telephone lines up and running today at Falls Creek campground near Davis in anticipation of up to 3,000 Hurricane Katrina evacuees who may never arrive, officials said Wednesday.

That's because Falls Creek has been placed "on standby" by state and federal officials as a possible relocation site, said Ray Sanders, spokesman for the Baptist General Convention, the camp's owner.

No one knows if and when the evacuees from Louisiana will be brought to the campground.

SBC is adding the voice and data lines in response to a request from the campground's owners, company spokesman Andy Morgan said.

"We are working as quickly as possible to make sure there are adequate phone services at Falls Creek, but we're working without really knowing what the demand is going to be," Morgan said.

Officials with Chickasaw Telecom also said that company could provide phone and data service to the Falls Creek site through a fiber-optic line located near the campground.

The Baptist General Convention contacted Chickasaw Telecom with the request to provide the telecommunications services when it appeared that SBC wouldn't be able to add the requested lines, said Tom Riley, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Chickasaw company.
