Family business successful without government

President Obama's “You didn't build that” comment struck a nerve. It brought back memories of 45 years ago when my parents and a partner started their plumbing and heating business. They literally worked from daylight to dark and then did all the bid work after dark. My mom did the bookkeeping and kept our family of six together. Dad's frequent saying was “There is no substitute for hard work.” His “secret” to success was to do what other people will not do.

Our business has grown over the years with help — from quality employees. Any business requires that, but it takes that initial entrepreneur to make something happen. What was conspicuously absent from our success? Government.
