The family photo in the yellowed 1976 Tulsa World news clipping shows Charles Ruble Sr. and his wife in their living room, surrounded by 17 smiling children.

“Work, education, worship make family of 19 tick,” the headline reads.

Mary Ruble tells the reporter that each child — from age 6 through 26 — is going to school, working or both. All go to church with the family, and she jokes that none is in jail, according to the Tulsa World.
