Fan question of the day: What will constitute a successful season for Oklahoma State?

"Seven wins, then win another bowl game. The offense is proven, if the defense can just come around. They've got a lot of big kids out there.” — Jack Stacy, Tulsa
"I think we need to improve our record over last year. The defense needs to improve. We need to be able to win some of those games we should've won last year, like Texas and Texas A&M. We just need to keep improving. Some people feel like if we don't get ‘x' number of wins, they'll be upset, but for me, as long as we continue to improve, that's what I'm looking for.” — Mike Stump, Stillwater "At a minimum, 7-5 and another bowl game. The defense has definitely got to improve.” — Kerry Tufford, Norman "In the last two years, since they've had so many close games, I'd say they have to win at least eight or nine games. They should win all the home games, which is seven games, then beat Washington State, Colorado, and I think they're finally going to get a win at either Texas or Texas Tech. With what I've seen of the defense in practice (Saturday), 10 wins is not out of the question.” — Ron Sheppard, Oklahoma City "I believe the defense will be critical. The offense has looked real good. I'd like to see about seven wins. That'd be great. Just win more than last year and each year, keep getting a little bit better.” — Jerry King, Dallas "I'd say 7-4 would be OK, and 8-4 would be more realistic. Anything beyond that would be extra. They say every year that the defense looks improved, but I want to see it on the field.” — Robert Hall, Moore "Eight wins. We're too young yet, so eight wins would be good this year. Next year, we'll have a chance to be even better.” — Jim Hollarn, Stillwater Compiled by Scott WrightToolbar sponsored by: David Stanley Ford

Your thoughts!
can't believe danny/itmustsuck/smyrna spent the whole twelve hours he worked last night on his husbandry horse.
Lee, davis - Aug 5, 2008 at 6:36 am
Good to see our old friend Danny/itmustsuck/etc. is back at it. You seriously need a life. If animal husbandry is so embarassing, how do you know what school ranks better than the other?
Barry, Fort Collins - Aug 4, 2008 at 6:40 pm
Oh Smyrna, one more thing. You shouldn't have anything against the breeding of livestock, it's responsible for the conception of your mother.
jason, stillwater - Aug 4, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Hey Smyrna...
Animal husbandry, also called animal science, stockbreeding or simple husbandry, is the agricultural practice of breeding and raising livestock. It has been practiced for thousands of years, since the first domestication of animals.
That is from Wikipedia, just thought I would help you out since you clearly don't understand what it means.
jason, stillwater - Aug 4, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Did you know that OU has a degree called "Letters", Smyrna?
Jacob, Kansas - Aug 4, 2008 at 2:27 pm
I enjoy our talks, itmustsucktobeosu. I think they help you feel better about yourself and vent before going downstairs for a sandwich your mother makes you every afternoon. It is a wonder that you were even conceived.
Jacob, Kansas - Aug 4, 2008 at 2:26 pm
Oh no, now Smyrna is trying to butt in and talk about recruiting. Did you know that OSU has a small class this year? Did you know that OSU had 2 previous Top-25 classes that have been red-shirted and are still young? Did you know that OU lost to Tech last season, and that is why you bring up Tech for no reason? Did you know that there is no way on this earth that you graduated from any university?
Jacob, Kansas - Aug 4, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Jacob, you can rest assure of one thing, there will be plenty of empty seats just in case you do have to sit beside Richard. Dont bash fellow osu fans who dont agree with your pathetic views of how osu football should be. I saw the osu Tech game last year, osu didn't beat them, crabtree dropped the ball. Dont forget that Jacob. What makes you think, "haha that was funy" anyway what makes you think osu will start winning more? I keep up with recruiting Jacob, osu's recruting isn't doing to hot at the moment, are they late bloomers? Maybe the recruitment is one of the things that is still on the rise for the past half a century now! I am so embarrassed for you Jacob, you attack me, OU, and the good osu fans that are fine with having a good agriculture program and winning a few games a year. Jacob there is nothing wrong with coming in second or third place in the Sooner state, you should be used to not coming in on top, I have heard things Jacob.
Jacob in kansas, mynewbff - Aug 4, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I have nothing against agriculture in this great state of Oklahoma, I know it was founded on wheat and Oil, rename the class what you wantit is animal husbandry, and there is no changing that I mean come on people, think of that name!, a person seeing animal husbandry will think "red neck", your poor poor osu is trying so hard to be a big time university, but the facts remain, animal husbandry was changed to animal science, and furthermore Langston University is the leading animal husbandry school in the nation, wow osu falls just short of Langston. I rest my case there. Jacob, I think we, as in the ones who dont put up with your babble about how good osu is are the ones getting under some skin, keep changing your name, it only proovs us right.
Jacob in kansas, mynewbff - Aug 4, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Richard, your rambling comment lost all credit when you said that Mike Leach would take this team and win the Big 12. Maybe Leach should win the Big 12 with his team first after 8 seasons? What do you think? I would hate sitting next to you at OSU games, and hope you don't come to a game. Ever. Even when we start winning more.
Jacob, Kansas - Aug 4, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Smyrna's obsession with OSU is comical. He says the same things over and over. I think he used to be itmustsucktobeosu and they both just say the same things on repeat. I am also thrilled to be able to get under this loser's skin, as he continues to refer to me. Time to find a new hobby besides OU football.
Jacob, Kansas - Aug 4, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Smyrna is irrelevant ... much more so than anything he says.
jonathon, panhandle - Aug 4, 2008 at 8:56 am
Smyrna... you are a tool. Do us all a favor and give us some insight on what your education consisted of. I for one graduated with my undergrad degree in Ageconomics and am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Enviromental Economics. What was your degree or degrees in? I don't know what your vendetta is against agriculture, but you are from Oklahoma and agriculture is one of the things that this state was built upon. Give us some facts on why Animal Science is not. important. I can guarantee that I can take anything you say and prove that they are irrelevant.
Joel, Stillwater - Aug 4, 2008 at 8:48 am
At some point we've got to give up the "too young" excuse for not winning football games. You can't possibly be "too young" for 5 straight years. This is a veteran ball club that should play like a veteran ball club, no excuses.
douglas, Albany - Aug 4, 2008 at 7:38 am
If Gundy had kept the I-formation based offense, we'd already have a Big 12 championship. But, Gundy is thinking about the future and building for the future. He bit the bullet, kicked those kids off the team, AND chucked the playbook out the window. I'm surprised the offense got going as quickly as it did. Gundy was thinking about the future when he did this - he wasn't thinking about the now and what would be easiest. The no-huddle spread (and its many variations) is the offense of the future. You sooner fans ought to take notice that your own team's head coach issued the edict in the spring that the OU offense will be running some newly implemented no-huddle spread plays. Why? Because he's just now seeing what Gundy saw three years ago. Head coaches are moving this direction cause they have to -- just to keep up. OSU's got a head start.
Jonathon, Panhandle - Aug 3, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Richard in Stillwater: I'm tired of reading about your personal vendetta for Mike Gundy. We could be coming off a Big 12 Championship in '07 and you'd still be b!tching because you have something personal against Gundy. I wish you would just keep to yourself and make hard copy journal entries every day to prevent you from going over the edge. But, don't pollute this blog area with your drivel - ok?
Jonathon, Panhandle - Aug 3, 2008 at 10:43 pm
There comes the broken record....more animal husbandry. Get a life. You suck at the one you have. You are a joke. You are not creative, not funny, not very smart. Just a moron. But keep using these boards to define your existence. What are you going to say? That you just play this game to rile up the OSU fans. Welp sorry to say, we just sit back and laugh at your stupidity. Are you a fan or an alum? Wait...I am sure you will say that you are an alum, you can be who ever you want when hiding behind a keyboard. I guess I should ask...are you 35 and is this keyboard in your parents basement? That seems about par for the course.
Laura, Peebly - Aug 3, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Greg, dont stray from the facts, animal husbandry is very embarrassing, and it sucks that osu faithful have to try and change it to animal schience, give it up osu is an ag school, you know animals, leave the major sports to the real OU, this is the Sooner state, Wyoming is the cowboy state. Just go away!
Jacob in kansas, mynewbff - Aug 3, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Smyrna....you should really learn something new. All of your posts are the same: blah blah blah animal husbandry blah blah blah. You really suck at this message board thing with your lack of creativity. I am glad that you are so busy in your every day life that you have all this free time to follow the OSU message boards.
Laura, Peebly - Aug 3, 2008 at 7:22 pm
"However"????? "realistic"????? Well Graham, there's only one reason you still ONLY wish for some obscure sign of improvement AGAIN this year. That's because Gundy drug a Houston Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Alamo Bowl program to dead last place behind Baylor. If Gundy doesn't expect to win the Big 12 himself, how the heck are the players going to end up expecting it? If Gundy does expect to win it, he should encourage the Cowboy Nation to raise the bar as well. A man (a 40 year old one at that) wouldn't be afraid to see the bar raised.
richard, Stillwater - Aug 3, 2008 at 6:40 pm
dude dont worry, Danny from you know where and the real Jacob are somewhat of lovers. He spews anti OU babble on here all the time. It all boils down to OSU has been on the rise for many many years now, we hear the same crap from the same dedicated Puke fans all the time, T. Boone spending all that money on an Animal Husbandry Secondary School is absolutely insane, call it animal sciences all you want OSU homers, I would be embarrassed too if I had a animal husbandry class at my school. Jealousy? are Sooner fans jealous of your "animal sciences"? I always thought that if a person was to be jealous, then the person that he was jealous of, would had to have done something great to be jealous of, and the last time I remembered the OSU football program wasnt that impressive. So Danny, you Jacob loving, animal husbandry promoting, dellusional OSU homer. I ask you what is there to be jealous of?
Jacob in kansas, mynewbff - Aug 3, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Well, Richard, you're right in one respect. We have too many fans that are satisfied with a mediocre record with a few "Awww, we should have won that but blew it," games thrown in. If people don't expect much better than that, we'll never be a serious contender. However, at the same time, you have to be realistic. 8-9 wins this season would mean improvement for the program. If we have a good season this year, which I think is possible, then 2009 will be a huge year for the program. In my mind, 2009 is the year that we really have a legit chance to take that next step up. I'm afraid it may be a little too early to be realistically thinking about a championship. However, we've got to have a good season this year to keep the momentum going. We can't afford to take any steps back, we're far enough behind already. This is a big year for Gundy. We may be a little young and inexperienced in some areas. We may still be a little thin in depth at some positions; however, there's more than enough talent on this team to win 8 games this season. Anything more, will be a nice bonus. Anything less, will be a disappointment and is not acceptable to me. I've given Gundy some slack because throwing out the traditional I-formation offense that had been a staple at OSU and bringing in a wide-open, spread offense took a lot of guts to do. It took time to get the players he needed for this system, and it's worked out pretty well so far. But, Gundy needs to produce a winning regular season record this year because .500 and mediocre isn't going to cut it.
Graham, Stillwater - Aug 3, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Very good Brent, yes OU was put on probabtion in the 80's, but not just once...rather twice. And then there was that time in the 70's...and that one in the 60's...and that one in the 50's. And, oh wait...are you still on probation from that NCAA ruling last year. Everyone knows the NCAA is all about money and that is why its darling programs like OU, USC, Miami, FSU, Ohio State, etc get their hands slapped, while programs like OSU and SMU getting taken behind the woodshed and made an example of. OSU was in a recruiting war for one player and recieved four years' probation, a three-year bowl ban, a two-year ban from live television and a twenty scholarship limit for 4 years. What OU got as far as probation wasn't anywhere near as severe as that, but there offenses were just as bad.....
Laura, Peebly - Aug 3, 2008 at 9:09 am
"7 wins"; "some obscure sign of IMPROVEMENT even if the records not better"; "7 or 8 wins"; "8 wins"... hence the problem. If you don't INTEND to win a championship... if you don't PLAN to win a championship... if you don't EXPECT to win a championship... if you don't have a championship as your GOAL... if you don't DEMAND a championship... chances are you WILL be subjecting yourself to the loser status of being content with seeking out some obscure sign of "improvement" and seeking excuses to retain Gundy and "just waiting until next year". 1) Inherited 15 returning starters from a winning Houston Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Alamo Bowl program. 2) Has the second highest paid Assistants in the Big XII and one of the highest paid staffs in the country. 3) Has, "arguably the best football facilities in the country". 4) "Three consecutive TOP (whatever) recruiting classes. 5) Despite a having a losing record, given raises and extensions each and every year. 6) Given a pass on the losses to Baylor and Houston and Troy State and likewise given a pass on a 4th quarter melt-down to K-State and A&M with annual 4th quarter chokes to Texas. 7) "Had to clean up Miles program"; "new Assistants"; "new system"; "takes time in the system"; "yea but their QB is really good"; "hard schedule"... afforded more excuses than you can count. There is no doubt in my mind that Rich Rodriquez or Urban Meyer or Nick Saban could have taken over that 2005 team when Gundy did and could have won with them. Gundy finished 4-7 and in dead last place behind Baylor. There's no doubt in my mind that Pete Carrol or Bob Stoops or Mike Leach could have taken THIS team in the spring and end up challeging for the Big 12 and end up in a BCS Bowl THIS year. The problem isn't "cockroach fans" or "Miles thugs" or "depth" or "top recruits" (Kansas, Rutgers, Boise) or any other BS. It's WAY past time to RAISE THE BAR. It's time to DEMAND 10 wins or better or demand to replace THE problem.
richard, Stillwater - Aug 3, 2008 at 9:00 am
Jealous of what? 6-6 regular seasons? A coach embarrassing himself and becoming more famous for a You Tube clip than his win-loss record? Gundy seems like a nice guy has proven nothing so far. Zac Robinson is a solid player but the bottom line is there would be a lot less enthusiasm among the OSU fans if 6-6 teams weren't allowed to participate in a third tier bowl game. OU sold its soul? The Sooners were put on probation in the late '80s. Just like - OSU. Ever heard of Hart Lee Dykes?
Brent, Dallas - Aug 3, 2008 at 8:16 am
Smyrna Sucks, jealous much?!
Had OSU sold it's soul decades ago to win at any cost like your slimey Swooners did (it's a fact, Jack), then we, too, could brag about our results.
Also in the past, OSU didn't have the commitment of the state's "law makers and breakers" nor the OSU administration for that matter, to continue any progress. We'd get something going only to lose our coach (Jim Stanley, Jimmy Johnson, Les Miles, etc) to a more committed, higher paying program with all of their bells and whistles.
Well, pally, that was your Daddy's OSU. Not today, sonny Jim.
OU has it's Gaylord media sugardaddy and OSU has it's Boone Pickens (who just also happens to be one, extremely intelligent man and international energy visionary) to lead his beloved alma mater to greatness.
Sit back, Smyrna Sucks, and watch the progress.
The OU domination of the state's fans is in for some evolutionary changes. Dinosaurs like yourself are in for some new OSU -- better adapt or say your goodbyes.
Danny, Vail - Aug 3, 2008 at 7:09 am
Roy you are about as dellusional as Ron Sheppard, I just dont get you faithful Puke fans! Your school has never been good, you have been on the rise for decades now, when is enough going to be enough? Just accept that osu would be a great Missouri Valley Conference team and all will be well. At least the competition would be more suited for the type of ball that is played at osu.
Jacob in kansas, mynewbff - Aug 3, 2008 at 4:30 am
Win the games we should and some we shouldn't... I'm happy... B12 will come sooner or later... go pokes!!
