Look beyond the electric neons and pretty pastels so popular this season, and you'll see another strong color trend: black and white.
It's one of those color combinations that never goes out of style. Some moments are just more noteworthy.
Fashion designers learned long ago that black and white translates to looks that are timeless and chic. And they reinforced that statement by sending out plenty of mod, glamorous and classic styles during the spring fashion shows. Designer Ralph Lauren wove the two colors throughout his spring presentation, then came out after the show wearing white pants and a black sweater.
This season, stripes lend a retro feel to dresses that nip and flare or stretch to the floor. Graphic skinny ankle pants give a nod to Mary Tyler Moore, who wore the style often on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in the 1960s. And nothing dresses up a crisp white pantsuit more than a buttoned-up black shirt.
The high-contrast combination shows up most often as stripes, color blocking, micro prints and geometrics on clothing and shoes, making it easy to embrace the look in a big way or as an accent.
Not into prints or patterns? Many women build their wardrobes around solid-color pieces in black and white. For a quick update, slip a skinny white belt on a favorite little black dress. Or play up white jeans and a black T-shirt with a white statement necklace, black and white striped sandals or a white cuff bracelet.
Black and white combos also are a great backdrop for a hint of color. Pastels may get lost among the bold print, but a bright color can hold its own.
“I love this black and white trend right now,” said makeup artist Alex Mendez-Kelley, owner of The MakeUp Bar. “Of course, this is what I wear every day. It is the best trend to add accessories to, either statement jewelry or long layers, a pop of color in shoes or handbags.”
In makeup, it's exactly the same idea, she said. Try a bold black eyeliner, an extreme cat eye or mimic Adele's heavy-lined eyes. But don't make eyes compete with lots of other makeup, she said.
To ensure the eyeliner looks awesome, steer clear of shimmer. Keep eye shadow simple and matte. To make a statement with your lips, go bold with hot pink, she suggested.
