Go ahead, lust after fall’s makeup palette of rich golds, plums and emeralds. But don’t even think about green eye shadow and red lips together. Can you say Christmas? “Some colors look better with other colors,” said Jason Hoffman, lead principal artist for Shu Uemura. A more neutral lip complements green eye shadow, as well as shades of gold and purple, he said. If you love to pucker up to red lipstick, opt for more neutral eye shadow, then consider slipping into a mustard yellow jacket, sweater or coat. Don’t turn up your nose until you give it a shot. Mustard yellow is one of the season’s hot colors. “Mustard yellow with red lips is the best combination,” Hoffman said during a visit to Balliet’s. “You need to make sure you have color in your skin, but the colors are so complementary.”

If there’s a must-have boot this season, and you know there is, it’s the riding boot. While much can be said for an unadorned black or brown fl at boot, why not consider one with detail, either a buckle, woven leather or lace-up front. Distressing is another element that gives boots an aged feel, like they’ve been worn for years. Riding boots are a natural tucked into skinny pants, but this fall the approach is more fresh and modern with dresses and skirts, both full and pencil styles. Generally, to-the-knee or shorter hemlines look best with fl at boots. To elongate your legs, add tights the color of your boots. Still on the fence about riding boots? Keep this mind: Riding boots are classic. Some years they may be more in style, but they never go out of style.

Who among us doesn’t yearn for that perfect ring, necklace, cuff or pair of earrings that’s classic yet modern and always appropriate? That’s part of the design philosophy behind Slane & Slane, a jewelry line designed by sisters Heath and Landon Slane. The two introduced Slane & Slane in 1995 because they wanted sterling silver jewelry with the same quality and detail found mostly in gold and platinum. The sisters, who live on opposite coasts, are inspired by architecture, history, nature, texture and symbolism. One design that shows up often on their pieces is the Napoleon bee, a symbol of strength. Today, the company offers several collections in sterling silver and 18 karat gold. It’s the range of their designs that’s surprising, from architecturally inspired pieces to delicate offerings laced with diamonds. Heath Slane will be at Cayman’s in Norman for a trunk show Oct. 21-22. A portion of the proceeds will benefi t Food 4 Kids.
