VINITA – A judge has dismissed a drug charge against a 74-year-old woman who lived in a home where marijuana and about $277,000 in cash were seized a year ago, a defense attorney said Monday.

Following a preliminary hearing Friday, Special Judge Rebecca Gore tossed out a charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute against Darlene Mayes of Vinita, said Josh Lee, one of her attorneys.

“We have maintained the whole time that the guilty guy was Jerry Van Dorsey, the son that they caught originally who tried to blame it on her,” Lee said Monday in a telephone interview.

“The evidence just wasn’t there to show that Darlene was guilty. The son’s the real culprit. He just tried to blame it on Mom,” Lee said.
