Father: Bomar close to decision

NORMAN - Rhett Bomar hasn't chosen his next destination, but he'll do it in the next couple of days.

Bomar's father, Jerry Bomar, said Tuesday the former Oklahoma quarterback was still considering whether to transfer to an NCAA Division I-A school or to a I-AA school. Jerry Bomar said his son was still considering Houston (NCAA Division I-A), Sam Houston State (I-AA) and three other schools, which he declined to name.

Rhett Bomar was dismissed by OU on Aug. 2 after a school investigation determined he and former offensive lineman J.D. Quinn had been paid for hours they did not work at a Norman car dealership. The players are currently ineligible because of the rules violations.

Under NCAA transfer rules, a player who transfers from one Division I-A school to another must sit out a season to establish eligibility

If Bomar transferred to a I-A school, it's unclear whether the NCAA might also require him to sit out games in 2007 as a penalty for the rules violations.

"That's what it comes down to," Jerry Bomar said. "We've got to figure out what's the best way to go for the amount of time. You don't know what the punishment's gonna be."

OU has submitted a preliminary report to the NCAA on the rules violations. But Rhett Bomar's and Quinn's reinstatement must be initiated by their new schools.

NCAA spokesman Erik Christiansen said Tuesday no school had initiated the reinstatement process.

Jerry Bomar said his son was doing well.

"Rhett's fine," Jerry Bomar said. "He's handling it fine. In a couple of days, he'll have a decision and we'll go on."
