Federal government seeking to seize more than $2 million in real estate from Teddy Mitchell
The federal government is seeking to seize more than $2 million in real estate in Oklahoma County from Teddy Mitchell on grounds he operated an illegal gambling business. Mitchell has not been charged. The government is making the allegations in a secret federal civil case.
The federal government wants to force Teddy Mitchell to give up more than $2 million worth of real estate in Oklahoma County on grounds he was operating an illegal gambling business.
A federal grand jury has been investigating allegations Mitchell, 57, is involved in illegal gambling. Police have said Mitchell ran a bookmaking operation out of his Oklahoma City home.
He has not been indicted.
The federal government, though, is already seeking forfeiture of his real estate. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney in Oklahoma City declined to comment.
The government filed a civil forfeiture proceeding in secret last year in federal court in Oklahoma City. It since has filed notices in land records at the Oklahoma County clerk's office about the requested forfeitures.
Those public notices identify about two dozen properties that are owned by Mitchell, his sons, a trust or their limited liability corporations.
The real estate includes his former home where his wife, Julie Mitchell, was beaten to death in 2010. The homicide case remains unsolved.
The home, at 640 NW 150, was listed in county records as having a market value of about $359,000 at the time of the homicide. It is currently valued about $355,000.
