Federal judge detains Edmond man on child abuse charge

Oklahoman Published: August 6, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A federal judge has ordered an Oklahoma teen accused of sexually abusing children at an orphanage in Kenya to be detained pending his trial.

The order handed down Wednesday by U.S. District Judge David Russell reverses a magistrate’s order that authorized the conditional release of 19-year-old Matthew Lane Durham to his family’s home in Edmond.

Russell handed down his order one day after Durham was named in a three count federal grand jury indictment that accuses him of traveling from Oklahoma City to Kenya to sexually abuse children at the Upendo Children’s Home near Nairobi. Prosecutors allege that Durham engaged in sex acts with as many as 10 children aged 4 to 10 while volunteering at the orphanage.

Durham’s attorney, Stephen Jones, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. has disabled the comments for this article.
