Feed the ego: Charity’s founder refuses to quit

THE OKLAHOMAN EDITORIAL    Comments Comment on this article14

Another act is over in the tragic play that Feed the Children has become. The play itself, though, seems far from finished.

Multimedia

Feed The Children’s founder, Larry Jones, has been fired but says he’ll fight the termination in court. The tragedy is that this man simply can’t conceive of the organization continuing without him.

Jones previously agreed to give up operational control of a charity that he ran for 30 years. He agreed to continue serving as a spokesman and fundraiser, a key role for any charity that depends on donations.

Scandal after scandal has rocked Feed The Children under Jones’ leadership, but revelation of these problems is likely not well known outside of the city in which the charity is based.

Thus, Feed The Children remains a viable conduit for money to relieve suffering and ease hunger. Jones deserves credit for all that he’s done but also criticism for his mistakes — including authorizing hidden microphones in the offices of three Feed The Children executives.

His response to being fired: "There’s going to be thousands of children go hungry this Christmas ...”

This is insufferable dialogue from a man who could have stepped down years ago instead of being forced to leave now. In effect, Jones is saying that Feed The Children is viable only if he’s alive and fully involved.

Every charity comes about because people with a vision work hard to fight the good fight. Ultimately, though, the organization is more important than its founder.

I used to donate to FTC. I then saw a place that they owened in Kansas City. It is hard anymore to know who you donate to and that the most of the money reaches thgose in need. It does appear that Jones has an ego problem

Larry Jones does care for those poor liberals. My parents and I have been support and donating them alot overs the years. Remember, there are still folks like these are left behind and can't keep up this recession, so why not giving a little when you have a chance.

Sounds like the gravy train is coming to a halt...

Hey Mike, FYI-Charity Navigator only uses audit/IRS numbers to provide comparative statistical analysis. For instance they make no distinction between cash and GIK when compiling income/expense efficiency ratios. They are in the process of changing that to include such things as effectiveness, legal entanglements, board competency etc. AIG is just folks evaluating many factors (rightfully or wrongfully). Philanthropy Today and Non-Profit Times the two most respected NGO newpaper/web-sites only report report self generated/third party articles but do not do comparative analysis.

John etc. Whether any of the groups you berate, care about others isn't what this is about. I may not care about someone but if the get some benefit from me it still comes out the same. Your holding up "AIP" is a great example of telling half the story just to fit your haters mind. The following is the rest of the pertinent part of the story. "AIP has long been the only major charity watchdog to give FC a poor rating. None of FC's numerous and serious problems have kept it from obtaining the top or four star rating from Charity Navigator. FC boasts on its home page at feedthechildren.org that it "meets the extensive standards of America's most respected charity evaluator."" You can always find someone to support what you want, but in this case, you found the ONLY one to support your hate.

Of course Boren had OU hire his wife to run the entire landscaping program. Molly Shi points to a tree and 1 hour later its moved. She's done a good job with it especially realigning the statues. At least Molly knows what to wear as Frances Jones puts on the cheapest clothes she can find just to make us feel sorry.

After May 3rd Larry wanted to partner with another well known religious organization to partnership in a massive building materials operation for people to rebuild their home with drastically reduced pricing. They were going to rent the old Cimarron Pottery building on I-40 prior to it moving to MacArthur. But it was not to be. Habitat got the funds and the partnership folded. I think one area FTC messed up was with the First National Center. They raided what they could and gave his wife a permanent job in the art gallery. George Nigh did the same thing at U.C.O. with the Nigh Institute in the University Center.

Nov.10u, Do you ever read what you write? You can't wait to see...? does that mean you don't know and want to find out when released? or that you do know and you just want to see it in public print? I suspect the first... which would mean that you don't know. Then.... you call him a criminal in a get rich quick scheme. How typical. years of little money and hard work, results in all of a sudden a hugely successful business. Just like every great entertainer is never an overnight success. They all paid their dues. If you are against religion, just say so. Seems like that's the burr under your saddle.

Can't wait to see, if it all comes to light, how much aid as a percentage of the overall income of FTC (in dollar amts) actually went to hungry kids. I'd guess the number is staggeringly small compared to the amount that Jones and his family kept for themselves.

Sad, he's a criminal, but as long as people are gullible and too lazy to do their homework before sending their checks in, con men will use aid efforts like this as a front for their get rich quick schemes. Tune your TV to TBN for many examples of more charlatans like LJ (only immensely more successful) hiding their criminal activity behind a tax-exempt status: Ken Copeland, James Roberson, Rod Parsley et al.

To the Editor-well said!

A bit of insight-the drive/ego/etc. that formed the successes of Feed The Children came from within Larry Jones. FTC is Larry and Larry is FTC. For him to "walk quietly into the night" will not happen. For Larry it would be like dusting oneself with vanishing powder-completely eliminating who one is.

Quite sad really and the word "consumed" comes to mind when I think of Larry and FTC. In one sense of the word I mean "fully engaged" and sadly in another I mean "completely destroyed".
