EDMOND — Edmond Beautiful members will take a ride on a city garbage truck Friday to see first hand who in Edmond is bagging and tying their trash.
The purpose of the ride along with city sanitation workers is to raise awareness among residents about the importance of tying up their trash in bags, said Toni Weimeister, Edmond Beautiful secretary.
“We want to see who just throws the trash in the green monsters,” Weimeister said.
Sanitation workers are not required to, but routinely stop and pick up stray debris when the trash is not bagged, she said.
Workers gather as much as they can, but because of time constraints, they cannot keep neighborhoods completely clean from trash.
“It is not a requirement, it is just something they do,” Weimeister said.
The idea to ride along with the crews came up about two years ago at the annual Operation Clean Streets when Edmond Beautiful members and sanitation crews worked together.
Josh Moore, Edmond Beautiful treasurer, said one of the goals of Edmond Beautiful is to monitor and educate people about littering.
“We want people to know it is important to tie their trash bags,” Moore said.
Residents are urged to monitor their own trash by bagging and tying their garage before putting it into the green trash carts.
