EDMOND — Edmond planning commissioners approved by a 4-1 vote this week a preliminary plat for Mon Abri, a development to feature office buildings and housing for people 55 and older.
Chairman Barry Moore cast the only negative vote for the development at Broadway and Covell Road.
Before voting no, Moore said he did not understand why the developer, R.W. Development, would not accommodate the neighbors' request for a solid wall fence.
“I can't for the life of me understand why it is a difficult task,” Moore said.
Ron Walters, one of the developers, said because of the elevation of the land there would be a 4-foot retaining wall with an 8-foot wood fence on top, but he would not install a solid fence as nearby residents had requested.
Lynda Sheafer, 2100 Cobblestone Court, said the property owners wanted the solid wall because car lights from the parking area would shine into their homes.
The project calls for 87 duplexes and triplexes on 10.18 acres. Four office buildings with a maximum area of 18,000 square feet are planned on 1.59 acres on the front of the property.
City council members last month unanimously approved rezoning from single family to planned unit development. They amended the city zoning plan to allow for the new development, in which units are expected to rent from $850 to $2,000 per month.
Five property owners in Rock Hollow housing addition, to the east, and Timberdale Estates, to the south, submitted petitions opposing the development. They opposed it because of increased drainage, month-to-month leasing and lighting.
“This is a senior community, and we are real proud of it,” Walters said.
