TECUMSEH — The Kato family was moving back to Wisconsin, closer to relatives and friends, after living in Oklahoma for a few years.
Three of the four of them will be buried Tuesday instead.
Roy and Jenny Kato, both 35, and their son, Joshua, 13, were killed in a weather-related traffic accident Thursday morning near Maine, Wis., the Wisconsin State Patrol reported.
The couple's daughter, Brook, 5, was the only one who survived. She suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.
The family was in the process of moving from their home in Tecumseh to Merrill, Wis., where Roy Kato's mother lives.
Roy Kato was transferring from his job at Shawnee's Oldcastle Glass to another facility, family friend Jerilyn Hart said.
Hart, who met Jenny Kato through a book club, said the family went up early because Jenny's mother, who lives in Michigan, had surgery.
“She's going to be missed. We were planning on Skyping with her for our next book club meeting,” Hart said.
Joshua and Brook Kato both played soccer. The family also was involved with the Boy Scouts and Rock Creek Baptist Church, according to the Shawnee News-Star.
The Kato family moved to Oklahoma in 2008. Roy Kato served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1999, according to the obituary.
Brook Kato reportedly is staying with her grandparents, and her family members are working to set up a trust fund for her, according to the Shawnee News-Star.
Funeral services for the Kato family will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Waid Funeral Home in Merrill, Wis.
