BARTLESVILLE — A judge in northeast Oklahoma has declared a mistrial after a man charged with assault reportedly attacked his own attorney during court proceedings.
A local newspaper reports that Shawn Kelly Kennedy was on trial Wednesday for the alleged assault of a Bartlesville church official. Officials say Kennedy grabbed his attorney by the neck following testimony from the first witness in the case.
Officials say Kennedy was quickly subdued by a sheriff's office deputy who was in the courtroom. Associate District Judge Russell Vaclaw cleared the courtroom and declared a mistrial shortly thereafter.
Officials say Kennedy's attorney was not seriously injured.
Kennedy had been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Prosecutors accuse him attacking a director at First Baptist Church's Family Life Center in downtown Bartlesville last April.
