A gang member was arrested on a drug trafficking complaint after officers found more than half a pound of meth in his car during a traffic stop, Oklahoma City police reported Friday.

Police attempted to stop Miguel Alvarez, 33, of Oklahoma City, about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of SE 15 and High Avenue because his car had a broken tag light. Instead of stopping, Alvarez threw a baggie out the car window and continued east on SE 15, according to the police report.

An officer stopped to pick up the baggie, which contained a crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamines, police said.

Alvarez stopped near the 1600 block of Stonewall Avenue. Officers arrested him, searched his car and found three more baggies of meth behind the glove box, according to the report. The contents of the four baggies weighed more than a half a pound.

Alvarez has a prior felony conviction for possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute from 1998, according to court records.

Police said Alvarez is a member of the South Side Locos and has gang-affiliated tattoos on both his hands.

He was released from the Oklahoma County jail Friday on $80,000 bail.
