An 11-hour standoff at a southeast Oklahoma City home ended Wednesday when police found a woman dead inside the home and arrested a man.

Gerald David Hume, 52, was arrested on a murder complaint and two complaints of pointing a firearm.

Family members of a 77-year-old woman asked police Friday to conduct a welfare check at her home, 11000 S Bryant Ave., Capt. Dexter Nelson said.

The relatives said the woman lived with her 52-year-old mentally ill son.

The son refused entry to the residence and said his mother was not home, Nelson said.

Family members requested another welfare check Sunday.

Again the son would not let officers into the residence, he said.

The bomb squad was called to check on suspicious items observed around the house, but nothing was found to be dangerous and officers left.

Nelson said officers returned Monday and again the son would not let them in.

Tuesday, patrol officers, homicide detectives, and members of the tactical unit and the bomb squad went to the residence to execute the search warrant.

The son refused to let officers in and claimed he had weapons in the house, Nelson said.

“You don't force entry into a house without the legal right to be in the house. That is why we tried to negotiate,” Nelson said.

Negotiators spoke to the son for more than 11 hours before police forced entry about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, he said.

Officers fired a bean bag shotgun at Hume.

He was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries before being taken to the Oklahoma County jail.

The name and cause of death of the dead white woman found inside the home will be withheld until the state medical examiner's field review and positive identification has been completed, Nelson said.
