Gov. Mary Fallin may soon be packing heat.

The governor says she has applied for a permit to allow her to carry a concealed handgun.

Fallin, who has armed troopers assigned to provide security for her, said she decided to get a concealed gun permit because she and her husband have handguns.

“It's good for my own personal safety to be able to carry if I choose to do that,” she said. “From a private citizen's standpoint, it's a matter of personal safety to be able to carry if a person chooses to do that. It may be right for some; it may not be right for others.”

Even with a concealed carry permit, guns are forbidden in many places in Oklahoma, including the state Capitol building.

A record number of Oklahomans have been applying for concealed carry permits.

Nearly, 40,000 people applied for such a permit in 2012.
