Gov. Mary Fallin appointed an Oklahoma City businessman and attorney Thursday to serve as secretary of state.

Larry Parman will begin his new duties March 1, the Republican governor said.

Parman, a Republican, will serve as a senior adviser to the governor on policy, economic and legislative issues. The appointment requires Senate confirmation.

Since 1984, Parman, 65, has served as the chief executive officer of Parman & Easterday, an Oklahoma City estate planning, elder law and business planning firm that has served more than 4,000 clients in the Midwest, according to the governor's office. He also has been a partner in Notch It Up Strategies LLC, a firm that offers marketing and executive development programs to business owners.

Parman also served as president of The Hawthorn Group, a public affairs firm in Alexandria, Va., and president and CEO of Trencor, Inc., an Oklahoma-based financial holding firm.

“Larry Parman is a successful and experienced businessman who knows what it takes to create jobs in this challenging economy,” Fallin said. “He will be a great asset to the state and to my office as we work to develop and implement reforms that improve our business environment and spur private sector growth.”

He replaces Michelle Day, who has been interim secretary of state since Feb. 1.

Parman would succeed Glenn Coffee, a former state senator and the first Republican in Oklahoma history to serve as a GOP leader of the Senate. Fallin named Coffee, of Oklahoma City, to the post shortly after she took office in January 2011. An attorney, Coffee announced his resignation in December to return to private practice.
