SHAWNEE — A man accused of stabbing his stepfather and then lighting the body on fire admitted to police he killed him during a heated confrontation.
Joseph Neay, 22, is being held in Pottawatomie County jail without bail. He was arrested shortly after 3 p.m. Friday on arson and murder complaints, court records show.
Shawnee firefighters responded to a fire at the home of Jennifer and Marty Jones about 10 a.m. Friday, court records show.
Upon entering the house, they found evidence of a struggle, blood spatter and bloody footprints. The body of Marty Jones was found in the kitchen.
Court records show police tracked down Neay's mother, Jennifer Jones, who was staying with family in Dallas. She told police where Neay lived, and they found bloody fingerprints outside his apartment.
Neay told police he went to confront his stepfather Friday morning because he had battered Jennifer Jones, records state.
Records show Jennifer Jones filed a protective order Oct. 29 against Marty Jones.
Neay said he and Marty Jones were fighting when a knife was pulled.
Neay took the knife from Jones and began cutting and stabbing him, records state.
The fight ended in the kitchen with Jones falling face down. Neay piled his sweatshirt and sheets on top of the body before igniting it with a lighter, records state.
Neay took police to the location where he hid the knife. The weapon was found in a creek.
Neay's next court date is Nov. 19.
