A man arrested on a complaint of assault and battery on a woman last month, now could face a murder charge in the death of the victim's unborn baby, Oklahoma City police said Thursday.
Ronald Paul Heatly, 58, was arrested Dec. 18 in the assault on a paramedic for Emergency Medical Services Authority.
Police said paramedic Joanna Hickerson and her husband and EMSA partner, Timothy Hickerson, were called to the 2400 block of N May Avenue to provide medical attention to Heatly.
While in the back of the ambulance, Heatly became combative, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said.
He kicked and kneed the female paramedic — who was 17 weeks pregnant — in the abdomen, Knight said.
Joanna Hickerson suffered a miscarriage Jan. 18. The state medical examiner determined the miscarriage occurred as a result of the assault and ruled the baby's death a homicide, Knight said.
It is the city's fourth homicide of 2013.
The Oklahoma County district attorney will make a decision on whether to file a charge in the homicide.
